How-to setup Seneca LearnID @myseneca.ca with Email Clients and Devices (e.g. Android, iOS, Windows, etc)

Recently Seneca dropped the mail server (@learn.senecac.on.ca) used for students and adapted a business account with Outlook Office 365 (@myseneca.ca) which has replaced the previous IMAP/POP settings for synchronizing your email and also added a nice 25 GB cap.

Thankfully the TLS authentication is an optional configuration (a vulnerability in TLS renegotiations was discovered) and now we have Exchange support for all devices which I highly recommend for your configuration. If you aren’t sure how the mail protocols work or haven’t taken OPS335, this is a good read to get you started but essentially:
Exchange: Support for syncing/pushing email/calendar/contacts, time-framed email syncing plus enhanced Android control allowing for text-messaging syncing and device security via security update (not sure about iOS)
IMAP: Syncs the same mailbox(s) across all devices
POP3: Each POP3 device receives an email and read notifications aren’t synced, I would not recommend POP3 but I’m sure some people still use it.
Exchange

Encryption method: SSL (Accept all SSL certificates)
Port: 443
*If you configure this on an android device, you’ll get a request to install a security update, once this is done, you can go to the Settings/Options/Phone in your Seneca mailbox online and wipe/lock your phone remotely or enable SMS syncing which allows you to receive texts to your Seneca inbox and also reply with emails which will be sent as texts.
If you don’t have support for Exchange, use IMAP:

These default settings are easy to remember and should always work but if the office365 server alias isn’t working or should you want to use POP3 messaging, the details for manually configuring the mail server are below:

FIXED *Ideally the server would be office.outlook365.com and the username would be your learnID but this configuration failed on my Android device and thus I used a blank domain with success, if you have an iOS device and this setup fails, try separating the domain and username.
*POP setting (Incoming)

Username: learnid@myseneca.ca
Port: 995
Encryption method: SSL
*Keep in mind POP servers remove the original copy of the message when downloading to a mail client disabling the ability to sync across multiple devices.

SMTP setting (Outgoing)

*Due to the vulnerability I mentioned, Microsoft Windows 8 (and likely Windows devices) do not support TLS on SMTP configured clients and will be able to receive but not send email.

Have you recently faced a problem with your i3/i5/i7 unable to overclock unless resuming from sleep at-least once after boot? Do you have an SSDT and the proper AICPM kext but the modifier stays stuck at 16x?

It’s not clear why this happens and I can’t say you’ll have this option available on your motherboard but what fixed this problem for me is to modify the stepper in the BIOS like so:

If you have a base clock of 42360 – change this value to 42000. (4.2GHz OC is easily achievable and specified as the max clock – though this may not always be true – it’s safe to test at 4.2GHz)

If you have a BIOstar mobo, you’re probably familiar with the ONE page – navigate yourself on over to that page and notice that the Base Clock is 10360 and the Step is 35 (or whatever you have yourself clocked at). Simply modify 10360 to 10000 and 35 to 42, boot into your Hackint0sh and you should notice an extremely faster boot, check your speeds with HWMonitor to ensure everything is going peachy.

As I said earlier, 4.2GHz is the max clockspeed supported by the Hackint0sh project but higher speeds are achievable. I’ve had this speed-stepper up to 5.0GHz and the only thing holding me back right now is my PoS PSU running at a pathetic 450w.

Currently I have it clocked at 4.4GHz (see the figure to your left),  and it’s a phenomenal difference from base clock while still able to manage power efficiently.

This fix is not completely understood but what I can tell you is that I’ve tried values all relevant to the task at hand 10360, 10000, 10240, 9960, even 9999 and 10001.. but it seems Apple may have modified the “traditional assumed value” (1x step measured in MHz) maybe to simplify things as computing evolves or just sheer laziness, who knows.

I have a BIOstar and Intel board that I was able to run mindless trial and tribulation of Overclocking, but I can’t say OCing for you will look the same, so if you are having this problem and are completely flabbergasted by the BIOS, Leave me a comment and send me a screenshot and I’ll try and help guide you to victory.

 

OSx86/Mac Mountain Lion 10.8.0 DP Installation Guide

If you’ve been scrambling for the past few weeks on how to get ML booting on your Hackintosh or Macintosh CPU, Here’s a quick guide that should help get you on the right track especially if your new to the whole scene.

They’re several ways to currently create a bootable USB to install Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and in this tutorial I will explain a 90% compatible (and extremely easy) way of creating that USB Installation to boot from a Macintosh (regardless of the unorthodox method) as it is a peremptory step in creating a bootable installation for OSx86 (Hackintosh) Users as well.

Note to OSx86 Users – Mountain Lion is a Developer Preview so as you can imagine, there isn’t much support. It’s likely you’ll want to try this on at least a core 2 duo. IntelHD3000 and all others alike (including Optimus) will have a much easier transition than those of us who have an unsupported/dedicated GPU – I would only suggest installation for developer purposes only or to show off to your friends but don’t expect this to run anything like 10.7.x. especially on Laptops.

Dual Boot Windows 8/OSX Lion – HFS+ R/W support in Apple’s drivers

Ahh, it feels strange that I’m the first to notice this… I’m sure someone could narrow down the exact driver for HFJ+ full R/W access but firstly I must explain my “Mac”/Windows setup:

  • iBoot EFI Bootloader on a GUID GPT Partition Table.
  • Dual Boot Windows 8 DP w/Tools + Mac OSX Lion 10.7.1
  • Multibeast + Customized Drivers to suite my odd combination of hardware (To be honest, I didn’t find an exact model for my mobo but managed to dispute any conflicts via the BIOS)
  • All Software Updates to date on both OS’s
  • VMware 4.0.2 (with “Boot Camp” Control)

Many have probably been aware that Paragon’s latest release is a little choppy when writing files and quite slow (that’s if you even got it functioning), MacDrive  latest release – the close competitor has better performance and overall more compatible with various hard-drive manufacturers IMHO. Unfortunately it’s also not functioning on Windows 8 DP; so if you’ve been struggling to have a fully sharable dual boot I suggest you do the following (especially if you have a real Mac):

  • Install a recent update for Boot Camp Drivers, I’ve tried a handful of the latest (especially 64x versions), and had success without any disturbances in my driver configuration… none of my drivers were “replaced” by the virtual drivers and more support (USB Hub support) came after a full install.
  • Of course, like I mentioned, someone could figure out which driver gives access to R/W support, that would be awesome and a lot more helpful (I guess that makes it free too?)

The glorious part of installing the full set of drivers for me, is having so many Mac products (Magic TrackPad, Magic Mouse, etc), are now functional in Windows 8. VMware and Boot Camp have a good way of working with each other, so it’s no problem booting back into your Mac and running Windows as a Virtual Machine. The bonus is the priority your Mac partition receives and is recognized with the Boot Camp Agent, it will even detect your Mac Boot partition:

I suggest to avoid Triple-Booting with any other Operating Systems as the boot menu for Windows 8 gets confused in Boot Camp and looks for a partition (Windows Recovery Partition) and will refuse to boot, I haven’t found a reasonable workaround yet and that may mess up your whole setup but hey, I’ll probably try it too.
